Purchase from The Samuel Johnson Birthplace Museum

For many people Samuel Johnson personifies the eighteenth century. from humble beginnings he talked and wrote his way to eminence, gathering about him friends and acquaintances, alist of whose names reads like a contemporary 'who's who'. he lived in an age when it was still possible to grasp 'principles of everything', and single-handedly produced a Dictionary of some 43,000 entries.

This book grew out of entries on exotic quadrupeds in Johnson's Dictionary, and can be read and enjoyed as an eighteenth-century bestiary. Includes definitions and what was known or believed about animals, their medicinal and culinary uses, their place in creation and eye-witness accounts of some of the famous wild creatures that provided a spectacle for gaping Londoners.
